Swiping without Sluicing

چکیده
In sluiced clauses, English allows a wh-expression to be inverted around its preposition in a process called swiping, as in (1a) (Merchant 2002). I show, contrary to previous work, that swiping is not limited to ellipsis contexts: it is also permitted when the inverted (swiped) whPP is coordinated with another wh-phrase, as shown for both matrix and embedded contexts in (1b-c), both from the internet.

Swiping in Child English
English allows a peculiar type of elliptical wh-questions that can be found only under sluicing, in which the wh-object of the preposition appears not after the preposition but before it, as in “John fixed it, but I don’t remember what with.” Merchant (2002) calls this construction Swiping. This study evaluates two competing syntactic analyses of Swiping, by using data from a novel source: the ...
متن کاملWhen a complement PP goes missing: a study on the licensing of Swiping
Overview One of the mysterious properties of the so-called Swiping construction ([1,2,3]) is that adjunct PPs, but not complement PPs, can license Swiping ([1]). Contrary to this observation, we show that complement PPs can, in fact, license swiping, but only when they have undergone Heavy Shift (HS). Based on this novel observation, we make the following two claims. First, following [4,5,6], w...
متن کاملPartial Case-Marking in Japanese Stripping/Sluicing: A Dynamic Syntax Account
This article presents novel data on partial casemarking in Japanese stripping/sluicing: only the final NP in multiple stripping/sluicing may lack a case particle. These data challenge previous works that assign radically distinct structures to stripping/sluicing depending on whether or not case-marking is involved. These case-marking patterns are reducible to incremental growth of semantic repr...
متن کاملMultiple Sluicing in English
This paper explores the nature of multiple sluicing in English, which has two or more remnant wh-phrases in clause edge position. At the beginning part of the paper we argue against Nishigauchi's (1998) and Lasnik's (2007) Gapping analysis of multiple sluicing, which says that two remnant wh-phrases each actually occupies the left and right edge of a clause, with the in-between string of words ...
